Position: Visitor Service Volunteer - Weekly Volunteer
Location: 1050 Joan Crescent, Victoria, BC, Canada
Impact Statement: Craigdarroch Castle is owned and operated by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, a private non-profit charity. The Castle Society’s charitable mission is to protect, restore, and preserve the Castle while bringing its stories to life. We hold National Historic Site status, but we are not affiliated with Parks Canada, nor do we receive federal or provincial funding. We welcome over 160,000 visitors each year from all over the world. This means that when you work or volunteer at Craigdarroch, you are acting as an ambassador for the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and even Canada!
Description: A docent is someone who provides visitors with a great experience in the Castle. This position learns about the history of the Castle itself, as well as the Dunsmuir family who built it, and the institutions that have occupied it since (military hospital, music conservatory, university, museum). Docents are then stationed throughout the Castle to share and interact with our visitors.
Training Details: Provided by Castle staff.
Working Conditions: Must be able to do stairs, and stand for periods of time. Must enjoy talking with guests from a variety of backgrounds.
Minimum Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Daytime, Weekend - Daytime
Time Detail: A 4 hour shift once per week
Age: 15+
