About the Position

Position: Youth Programs Volunteer
Location: 930 Balmoral Road, Victoria, BC, Canada
Description: 1) Tutor/Mentor for Homework Club 2)co-facilitator for The Meet Up 3)Youth Summer Camps 4) and other youth seasonal programs. Volunteers assist in delivering ICA’s youth programs, and to supporting newcomer children or youth settlement and skill building. Provides friendly support to youth participants and program facilitator during weekly youth program:

• Shows non-judgmental interest in the lives, ideas, feelings of newcomer youth
• Helps newcomer youth feel welcome and engaged in weekly activities
• Plans and facilitates workshop activities such as energizers, icebreakers, openers, closers or debriefs during youth programs
• Maintains regular communication with the Settlement Youth Worker (program facilitator)
• (Youth Tutor/Mentor) Assists newcomer youth with homework (English, math, science, socials)
Training Details: Orientation and support will be provided by the Settlement Youth Worker or Youth and Family Services Coordinator
Working Conditions: Requirements:
• Canadian-born or living in Canada for at least 2 years
• Strong communication skills
• Open-minded and respectful
• Creativity, humor, positive attitude
• Cross-cultural experience or a personal commitment to learning about other cultures
• Familiarity with the Greater Victoria community and Canadian culture
• Knowledge of other languages in addition to English is an asset, but not required
• Facilitation and presentation skills helpful
• A clear criminal record check is required
• Age requirement: will depend on role/position
Minimum Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Daytime
Time Detail: • Tutor/Mentor & co-facilitator for The Meet Up, minimum 6 months; 2 – 4 hours/week
• Hours and commitment timeframe will vary for all other positions/roles
• Position located at ICA, but may include fieldtrips
Age: 16+
