Description: If you love children and are interested in helping newcomers adjust to living in Saanich, consider providing childcare during a SpeakWell drop-in program. These children are from various cultural backgrounds and need a responsible and fun childcare provider to play games, read books and help them create artwork while their parents learn to speak English.
The children will vary in ages but most will probably be between 2 and 10 years of age.
Major responsibilities/Key expectations of volunteers:

Behave in a professional and respectful manner.
Ensure the safety and security of participant’s children within the same space as the participants.
To be punctual and reliable.
To be a positive role model and act appropriately around children.
To understand age-appropriate developmental stages of children.
Training Details: No formal training required, however, must be:
Genuinely enjoy being around and playing with children.
Communication skills – not necessary to speak another language but it may be helpful.
Friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic attitude with an interest in helping new immigrants and refugees become active members of our community.

Satisfactory completion of Child Protection Training (done in-house)
Canadian Language Benchmarks – at least Stage II - Speaking – Benchmark 8 see Profile of Ability p. 68

The volunteer commitment is between 6 months and a year. Of course we'd prefer a year.
The group meets at the Gordon Head Lawn Bowls Club - 4105 Lambrick Way (right near the Gordon Head Recreation Centre.)

Volunteers should come with ideas for games, songs, stories, and art activities.
Minimum Duration: 7 - 12 months
Timing: Weekday - Evening
Time Detail: Hours required are every Wednesday from 6:45 to 8:45 pm.
Age: 19+
