Description: The Creative Arts Assistant is a unique opportunity to support the abilities of a particular resident with significant mobility and motor skill challenges so she can fully participate in a painting class. In this role, you would accompany an adult living in residential care at Nigel House to and from the Veterans Memorial Lodge's Creative Arts Studio. You would be ensuring that the resident reaches the studio safely by HandyDART while providing companionship and assistance in the studio for setting up her paints and cleaning brushes.

The volunteer for this position must be comfortable interacting with people living with cognitive, emotional or physical challenges. The volunteer must be physically able to walk and push wheelchairs, communicate clearly, and manage issues as they arise and make decisions. A volunteer who is friendly and a sociable companion will be able to offer assistance while also maximizing the resident's independence. An artistic background is an asset.
Training Details: Volunteers will complete a general volunteer orientation, and go through a criminal record check process (no cost). You will also be provided with a one to one training shifts to learn how to operate an attendant controlled wheelchair and how to best support the particular resident so she is successful in the creative arts studio.
Working Conditions: Volunteers are able to carry out their duties independently with minimal staff support, especially while travelling independently via HandyDart. Volunteers are able and willing to learn more about adults living with physical and cognitive challenges.
Minimum Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Daytime
Time Detail: Wednesdays 1:00-4:00pm

Pick up by HandyDart between 1:00-1:30pm at Nigel House, Creative Arts studio time at Veterans Memorial Lodge, and then HandyDart drop off at Nigel House between 3:30-4:00pm
