Position Hygiene Assistant - Our Place Society

Impact Statement OPS has evolved from an inner-city community centre founded on the principles of hope and belonging to an integrated organization serving Greater Victoria’s most vulnerable, including people struggling with homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use issues, the working poor and impoverished elderly. Broad-based and committed community support allows OPS to provide over 1,000 meals every day plus snacks, 450 units of housing plus transitional shelter spaces, hot showers, education, job skills training, health care, addiction recovery services, clothing, counseling, outreach services and a downtown storage facility. Most importantly, OPS provides a continuum of care and a sense of hope and community to those who need it most. OPS programs and services are delivered by experienced and caring staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
Description • Follow all COVID-19 Safety protocols at all times.
• Facilitate the sign in and out process of family members using showers. Maintain a wait-list, as required.
• Record the number of visits for showers, foot baths and shaves.
• Clean shower stalls and lockers as required in collaboration with staff.
• Hand out towels and toiletry bins.
• Record the number of toiletries distributed to family members.
• Facilitate the sign in and out process of family members using day-use lockers.
Training Details • All volunteers will receive an in-person or virtual general orientation.
• All volunteers must also complete their required e-learning modules.
• Volunteers will receive specific on-the-job training, guidance, and support from an experienced hygiene outreach staff member to work in collaboration together, volunteer is not to work alone in hygiene.

• Volunteers are to demonstrate empathy, flexibility and strong people skills.
• Volunteers are to participate in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.
• Volunteers are to respect the confidential nature of shared personal information.
• Volunteers are to use first names only and not share personal contact information for staff, volunteers and family members (clients).
• Volunteers are to discuss concerns with the team leader.
• Volunteers are to inform the team leader or the manager of special needs that might affect ability to undertake certain tasks.
• Volunteers are to immediately report injuries to the team leader.
• Volunteers are to avoid accepting gifts, including money, from family members.
• Volunteers are to avoid offering gifts or loaning money to family members.
• Volunteers are not to be impaired by alcohol and/or drugs prior to or during shift.
• Volunteers are not to set aside donated items for personal use.
• Volunteers are to wear an Our Place volunteer nametag while volunteering.
• Volunteers are to remain in their placement area for their entire shift and they should only be in staff and volunteer areas when they are scheduled.
• Volunteers are to let the volunteer services department know when they are going to be away or late for a shift.
Minimum Duration 3 months or less
Timing Weekday - Daytime, Weekday - Evening
Time Detail Weekly shifts or flexible scheduling available.
Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM and 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
