Position Giftshop assistant
Description The Maritime Museum of BC is looking for a volunteer to help in the giftshop. The main focus would be on helping to source new items to sell in the giftshop. The Museum is looking to bring in new vendors. The type of vendors we are looking for are local artisans that create unique product that has a nautical or maritime theme that would go well in the Museum’s shop.

The giftshop assistant would also help with some of the day to day running of the Museum’s Shop, such as helping to process new giftshop items and merchandising in the giftshop.

Much of the volunteer work can be done off site with some time spent onsite at the Museum.

Working Conditions Duties include:
Offsite:
• Sourcing new vendors and products
o Visit local markets and craft fairs
o Approach potential vendors to gather information on their products and if they would be interested in sourcing to the Museum
o Find out if they wholesale and if so, what the minimum order would be
o Find out if they would be interested in consignment in lieu of wholesale
* Consignment would consist of an agreement between the Museum and the vendor to pay the vendor 60% of the proceeds of items purchased in the shop rather than paying wholesale.
o Explore Etsy for potential local vendors
o Contact vendors by email to ask about wholesale or consignment
o Pass all leads along to staff who manages the giftshop.

*Please note that the Museum staff will have the final approval on whether an item is sold in the Museum Shop or not.

From home and/or personal computer
• Creating descriptions for products to go on the website
• Sourcing images of books if they exist online
• Send descriptions and images to giftshop coordinator

At the Museum
• Merchandising Museum merchandise
• Preparing merchandise
o Putting together sets as necessary, unwrapping new merchandise, taking photographs of items to go on the website
• Putting labels on merchandise
o Labels to be printed by the Museum staff
• Help to fulfill online orders
o Pull items from the shelf, prepare packages, and bring them to the post office (postage is pre-paid).
o Staff will print off packing slips and mailing labels ahead of time and have them ready for the packages to be prepared and posted.
