Position Mentor - BIG Steps to Success - Community Mentoring Program
Impact Statement Big Steps to Success (BS2S) is a one on one mentorship program specifically designed for children and youth aged 7 to 14 living in government care. By spending two to four hours each week with a child or youth you can empower them to reach their full potential. Have fun together, encourage them to try new things, talk to one another, and become friends. Make a BIG difference by giving LITTLE time! Mentors are expected to fulfill a minimum commitment of 1 year.
Description Our volunteer mentors are caring and responsible individuals who:
- Model honesty, truth and respect for others.
- Have a genuine concern, interest, and enthusiasm for children and youth.

We ask you to provide the names of three to four references. They should be 19+ years of age and be able to speak to your character. We need:

- Spouse/Partner or Family Reference.
- Personal Reference, i.e. long-time friend, neighbor, colleague, etc.
- Employer/Supervisor Reference, past or present workplace.
- Vulnerable Sector Reference. Only if you have worked/volunteered with children, people with disabilities or elderly persons in the last 5 years

Volunteer Mentors don't need:
- Money - we encourage no/low cost activities.
- Experience - your interest, enthusiasm and genuine concern for children are what matters most.
- A vehicle - we do our best to match you with a child/youth who lives close by.
Training Details Volunteer BS2S mentors are required to attend an orientation/training session, Developmental Relationships training, and training about the specific needs and experiences of youth living in care. Volunteers are also invited to on-going workshops once matched with a child. You'll have a trained staff member supporting you at all times. BS2S matches will have additional support from child welfare partners. Everyone is welcome to apply, no experience necessary!
Working Conditions To ensure mentees have consistent support, mentors and mentees have the flexibility to meet both in school and in the community (e.g., the beach, movie theatre, or at home). Where a match visits depends on everyone’s preferences and schedules!
