Homelessness touches many lives at a significant cost to communities. The Cool Aid Society has been a key player in the work to end homelessness in the Capital Region for decades.

MISSION

Working with our partners in the Capital Region, we offer life-changing services to adults who are impacted by poverty, colonization, stigma and homelessness. These services include permanent housing, emergency shelter, health and dental care, employment assistance, and social and recreational opportunities.

OUR VISION

A community where no one is forced to sleep on the street or go hungry and everyone has the dignity that comes with home, health and connection.

Description The Victoria Cool Aid Society seeks diversity in experience, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, country of origin, and ability of qualified nominees and particularly encourages applications from those who identify as Indigenous, as a racialized person, or have a lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use, homelessness or disabilities. The following broad categories of skill and experience are also considered as guides in board director selections: community health, social housing, urban Indigenous issues, real estate and/or development, financial management/business, fundraising, legal expertise, media relations, government/public sector, urban planning and community leadership.
Training Details WHY SHOULD YOU VOLUNTEER AS A COOL AID BOARD DIRECTOR?

As a Board Director, you will:
•Apply your expertise in the sector and help advance Cool Aid’s social impact in Greater Victoria.
•Meet a diverse range of people.
•Network with like-minded community-builders.
•Feel great about making a meaningful, positive contribution in your community.

As per, Part 5.5 of the Society bylaws provides that Board Directors shall be elected by the Society at the Annual General Meeting for a term of two years. As per 5.6, Directors shall serve no longer than three terms. The Society’s Annual General Meeting is held each year at the end of June. A Board orientation and planning retreat is held in the fall.

Working Conditions Cool Aid’s Board of Directors operates as a governance board and its Directors’ key responsibilities are to:
•Provide strategic guidance and oversight;
•Be an ambassador who promotes and advances Cool Aid’s vision, mission, and strategic goals;
•Attend monthly board meetings. The board meets approximately 10 times a year, generally in the evening of the 4th Wednesday, with the option to attend virtually if needed;
•Participate in at least one sub-committee. Subcommittees meet once a month for an hour;
•Ensure compliance for legal, financial and contractual obligations.
