Description |
Gallery Interpreters engage with visitors to the Maritime Museum of BC. Using our handling collection of maritime & historical artefacts, interpreters facilitate conversations about the artefacts and the broader history behind them. Interpreter volunteers also answer questions from Museum visitors about the current exhibits. Volunteers may be involved in tasks including but not limited to: - Selecting artefacts from the Museum’s handling collection and bringing them into the gallery for discussions with visitors. -Answering visitor questions about the Museum’s current exhibit or maritime history in general - Conducting independent research to familiarize yourself with the artefacts, on top of provided training We are seeking volunteers who are: - Knowledgeable of maritime history, history in general, or artefact interpretation - Confident & comfortable engaging with people of all ages in discussions around historical artefacts |
Training Details |
All Maritime Museum of BC Volunteers complete general online training on Museum operations. Gallery Interpreters also receive in-person training on artefacts in the handling collection, how to handle them, and the basics of object interpretation learning. Gallery Interpreters will also receive basic training on the Front Desk / Visitor Centre protocols at the Museum. The intention with Interpreter volunteers is for them to receive training over the quiet winter season so they are ready to engage with visitors during the much busier spring and summer seasons. |
Working Conditions | Indoors at the Maritime Museum of BC, seating provided. Working with members of the public of all ages. |
Minimum Duration | 7 - 12 months |
Timing | Weekday - Daytime, Weekend - Daytime |
Time Detail | The Museum is open 7 days a week from 9:30am – 4:30pm. Interpreter shifts are currently scheduled in the morning (10am – 1pm) and afternoon (1 – 4pm). Volunteers are welcome to sign up for the days and times that fit their schedule. |
