Position KidStart Volunteer Mentors - KidStart Mentoring Program
Location KidStart youth on the waitlist live from Sidney to Sooke and everywhere in between!
Impact Statement KidStart mentors are positive role models for at-risk children and youth who have experienced early exposure to the justice system. It's a chance to have fun, participate in community-based activities, and build a lasting relationship with profound community impacts.
Description KidStart is a mentorship program for kids ages 6-18 who have had early exposure to the justice system. Volunteer mentors get to plan a variety of activities, and simply have fun with their assigned mentee once a week for ~3 hrs.

Get to know a youth through activities like rock climbing, mini-golfing, pottery, and much more. Mentors have access to a range of discounts and free passes to amazing businesses in our community.

Applicants must be 19+, be employed, retired, or attending school with a stable routine, and able to commit to the program for at least one year upon being matched with a mentee.

Due to high volume, kids, especially boys, can wait 1+ year for mentors. All applicants are welcome; we have a specific need for male-identifying volunteers.

We welcome applicants from across Greater Victoria as we have youth on our waitlist from Sidney to Sooke.
Training Details Our screening process involves at least two interviews, three references and a police record check.
If successful applicants attend two orientation sessions before being matched with a mentee. This process can take up to a couple months. Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of one year upon being matched to ensure a positive experience for the youth and to provide consistency.
Once in the program, ongoing training and support is provided, including an abridged emergency First Aid session.
Working Conditions We are looking for individuals who are consistent, enthusiastic, and empathetic.
Volunteers will spend approximately 3 hours per week out in the community with their mentees for a minimum of one year.
The dates and times of these visits are flexible, as it is the responsibility of the volunteer to coordinate directly with the mentee and their family.
Volunteers may use a vehicle for KidStart, but it is not required. If a volunteer chooses to drive they must provide a copy of their insurance and driving record.
