Position: Youth Mentor - Youth Activity Centres - Saanich Recreation Youth Activity Centres
Location: Saanich, BC, Canada
Impact Statement: To strengthen and connect community through recreation volunteerism.
Description: In our Youth Services section, we are looking for volunteers to build relationships and have fun with the young people who attend our Youth Activity Centre programs. Come and connect with youth in a safe and playful atmosphere. Please note that volunteers should be comfortable with loud music, occasional profanity and boisterous behavior as well as peanut products.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Learn the names of the participants
• Follow the lead of staff
• Initiate games, introduce activities, assist with food preparation
• Observe interactions of participants, re-directing when needed Model appropriate behavior and language
• Assist staff with set-up and take-down of activities and clean-up of space
• Provide additional supervision
• Converse and engage with middle-school and high-school aged youth
• Report anything of concern to staff
Training Details: Knowledge, Skill and Qualification Requirements:
• 20 years or older
• Proficient in the English language
• Clear current Criminal Records Check or Police Information Check
• Excellent communication
• Enthusiastic!
• Love working with youth
• Appropriate personal boundaries when working with youth
• Well organized
• Willing to learn

• Volunteer Application (Liability Waiver, Code of Conduct, Policies for Volunteers and Contractors)

• Supervisor Meet and Match Interview
• Site and Role Orientation
Working Conditions: Working Conditions: In multi-purpose spaces equipped with various table-top games such as ping-pong, air hockey and billiards, kitchenettes, video game systems and lounge furniture. Activities can be taken into other interior multi-purpose spaces such as gyms, kitchens, skating rinks and swimming pools. Sometimes activities are taken outside in cleared parking lots, wooded areas and fields depending on weather. Staff supervised.
Minimum Duration: 4 - 6 months
Timing: Weekday - Evening, Weekend - Evening
Time Detail: Commitment and schedule: At least one weekly shift, for at least three months. Shifts are generally after-school, weekday evenings and weekend evenings, although there are also weekday opportunities with home-school programs. Scheduling is flexible and will be decided upon between volunteer and Youth Programmer.
