| Description |
C.A.M.S Mentors are Correctional Service of Canada volunteers, operated by the John Howard Society of Victoria. Volunteer mentors are screened and provided extensive training in order to provide one-on-one support to offenders with high risk/needs as they reintegrate into society after serving time in a federal institution (sentences of 2 years or more). The mentor will enter a 1-year commitment for this role, with the hope of continuing. During this mentorship, volunteers assist with: Grocery shopping Banking Navigating the city Participating in recreational activities of interest Employment/education seeking Coping with stressful situations Forming and maintaining healthy relationships Following release plans |
| Training Details |
Successful applicants will be required to attend an orientation session, which is approximately 3.5 hours. In addition to the orientation, there will be several training modules that are mandatory for C.A.M.S Mentors - these modules will be provided by the Coordinator of Volunteers as well as Parole staff and will take place over a 10-week period. Training modules will cover a variety of topics such as conduct and confidentiality; risk and relapse; and boundary-setting. | Working Conditions |
Public Safety is the main concern with CAMS. Our mentors complement the work of Parole Officers, Halfway Houses and other agencies in order to ensure our community remains safe. CAMS mentors must be the age of majority (19), and have Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency. Mentors are recruited from various populations, including: colleges and universities, Victoria Parole volunteer register, LGBTQ+, and recovery programs. The role of the CAMS mentor requires the individual to be out in the community with the offender they are matched with. The setting my differ with each meeting, whether you are assisting your match with grocery shopping, problem-solving, or attending a sporting event together! |
