Description |
The PiT Count involves conducting a brief, anonymous survey with people who are experiencing homelessness. Survey volunteers work in assigned teams under the leadership of someone with experience in the field. Volunteers need to be fluent in English or French. Fluency in other languages is an asset. The Count is conducted indoors in shelters and also outdoors in specific areas or neighborhoods. In previous counts the areas have included: Area 1: James Bay, Fairfield, Oak Bay Area 2: Downtown Core Area 4: Fernwood/Jubilee Area 5: Hillside/Mayfair Area 6: Vic West & Burnside-Gorge Area 7: Cuthbert Park & Esquimalt Area 8: Saanich Area 9: West Shore Area 10: Sooke The exact areas and locations will be confirmed early in 2023. A large number of volunteers are needed to survey between 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm on March 8, 2023. |
Training Details | Each volunteer must attend a two-hour training session and must be 19 years of age or older. Training sessions will be scheduled in February and March 2023. Multiple training dates, times, and locations will be available for volunteers to choose from. |
Working Conditions |
Volunteers surveying indoors in shelters and outdoors on the street and in parks need to be able to stand and/or walk for up to 3 hours. Accommodations can be made for volunteers who are unable to meet this requirement. Volunteers will work in pairs or small groups. Volunteers will be given a survey supply kit, which includes flashlights, vests, public transit tokens, clipboards, pens and identification. We encourage all volunteers to bring a cell phone. |

Volunteers are asked to complete one or more 3-hour shifts. The indoor location survey shifts are tentatively scheduled from 10 am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm, 3pm to 6pm, or 7pm to 10pm The outdoor survey shifts are tentatively scheduled from 4pm to 7pm, from 6pm to 9pm, and from 8pm to 11pm The times are tentative and may change when survey locations are confirmed in February 2023. |
