OrganizationRocky Point Bird Observatory
Position: Bird Survey - Rocky Point Bird Observatory Migration Monitoring
Location: Pedder Bay Drive, Victoria, BC, Canada
Impact Statement: Rocky Point Bird Observatory’s mission is to conserve birds through long-term ecological monitoring, scientific research and community outreach. Our primary role is to monitor the population trends, productivity and survivorship of songbirds in coastal British Columbia through daily surveys and bird banding. We also have a strong commitment to public education and training.
Description: Are you able to identify 75% or more of the birds that you see or hear in the Victoria area? Can you walk about 3 km in 75 minutes on mostly flat, but sometimes rough terrain? Can you be at Pedder Bay one hour after sunrise? We are looking for experienced birders to conduct a 75 minute bird survey as part of our census team. Our census route is mostly on level roadways and trails, but there are a couple of short hills and some uneven ground. Our monitoring season runs from July 21 until October 18. Our hope is that we can identify several people who could come out and conduct this survey at least once every two weeks.
Training Details: We need the census people to be experienced birders, a skill that takes several years to develop. However, if the volunteer wishes to become involved in other monitoring activities, such as removing birds from mist-nets or banding birds, we will provide training for these.
Working Conditions: Works with a team doing migration monitoring through the mist-netting and banding of songbirds. The census is conducted solo, and the data entered in the daily log book before the census taker leaves the site. If interested, the census person can also participate in other migration monitoring activities.
